Great article.

I really like Emma Hayes' reply to the question (and easier for her to be so clear with her track record).

The clear intention is to make Arsenal consistently among the top teams in Europe. The question is going to be, can players buy-in to this and the whole squad required approach, rather than "I need to be a regular starter" approach.

I really hope she re-signs and also reaps the rewards.

The way the game is going, and with the introduction of the five subs rule, successful match day teams are more about the squad on the day than the 11 starters. It's the job of the coach to create this atmosphere within the team to make the 'impactors' in any game feel just as important. It's about game state now, more than ever. Some players will want to be part of that, where others will want to be the bigger fish in a smaller pond. Every player has their own goals (!) in their careers, and recruitment of the correct player and personality is so important when you have the coaches that has the outlook of managers like Jonas

Interesting as always, Tim. As you say, Stina has been probably the biggest victim of your failure to qualify for the Champions League. I hope we can convince her to sign again, she is by far and away the best "back up" striker in the league and I wholeheartedly agree that having a striker who can play in a different is useful for changing things up

Was just talking to some Swedish Gooners about Stina and playing time last night. Excellent article Tim and perfect timing ;-)

I am still unsure if Jonas has what it takes to make top talent buy into his program or feel that they will be able to accomplish personal career goals here at Arsenal. On the men’s side you get the sense that Mikel is why a lot of players are staying or want to sign for the club. I don’t know if I get that same sense from Jonas.

It’s definitely in the ‘to prove’ category. He’s never really had a squad this size before, showing he can manage it is a big KPI

You often mention the 3-5-3 system. I'm very interested in who you would choose for this system. We certainly have the centerbacks (and possible Catley) to play the 3 (especially when Williamson returns to full fitness). I'm guessing you would use Fox and McCabe on the wings of the 5, with Russo and Stine as the 2 up top. The fascinating part, and where my question lands, is who would you use as the middle 3 of the 5?

I’m less hung up on a defined XI, big teams don’t have that. I think lots of players could play wide or as the second striker and we’ve got lots of CMs and CBs.

Would you use Fox over Mead? Not sure with the 5 if the 2 on the wing need to be more defence minded. In the middle 3 I would go Walti, Little and Viv.

I don’t think I’d worry about a defined XI. I think lots of players could play wide or as the second striker. I think we’d have lots of options in that system
