Like a lot of fans, my opinion of Manu has see-sawed. However, a constant has been her desire to be the best she can for the team and not lose heart. I feel if you cut her she would bleed Arsenal. She also has the ability to raise the support from the fans, always gesturing to them from her area to raise the noise levels.
Interesting that she raised her level when a competitor came in but arteta criticised for destroying Ramsdales confidence and rayas (at first) for making the position competitive. Maybe ramsdale would have improved in time if given more games. We will never know.
I have never really understood the dislike of Zinsberger. She's not a great keeper but then I don't know how many really are and I think her personality and willingness to learn made it right to extend the contract. Eidevall's first season was the first one I took a greater interest in the women's team and as Tim points out, it was notable how much she improved during that season, particularly in how she parried shots and has continued to grow since.
In more than any other position it's where the gap in quality is at its greatest between men and women's game. I would guess this is due to it being such a specialist position, lack of specialist coaching and also lack of full time professionalism in the women's game until very recently. One thing it would be interesting to learn more about is goalkeeping in the women's game, how it's changed and is changing and how it will take in to account the physical differences between men and women's ie being smaller etc. Possible podcast Tim?
I value her effort but she isn’t an elite goalkeeper and there aren’t a lot in woso we need to find ours cos the amount of times last season where the opponents have one attack and just score which isn’t only her fault but as a result of them beating our press but in some of those situations she could have done much better and as for her commanding of her area she is easily bullied I think a keeper that commands their area is much needed and she makes me nervous when I see her play from the back but her reflexes are so underrated but her positioning is so poor at times but yeah happy to see a top goalie come in and push her I defo don’t want an avg goalie coming in next season and just giving up on the battle against manu
I definitely don’t agree that she gets bullied coming off her line. She has 12.6% crosses stopped this season. The third best GK in the league on that stat has fewer than half that number. She led the league by a long, long way for crosses caught so if she is getting bullied, every other GK in the WSL is getting utterly pulverised.
I think when you see some of her handling at times and see us conceding from set pieces you just have this memory that it is manu’s fault I just went back to see all the goals we conceded this season bar the westham clanger and that was from a cross I can see alot been her fault I am just scared of her by default cos she is shakey a little bit
